More Woody Allen Vintage Fashions

Hannah and Her Sisters from 1986 is one of my favorite Woody Allen movies. Holly played by Dianne Wiest has the best clothes. I love the bow in her hair, plaid shirt, vest, earrings and double necklaces.

Interview with Atlanta Institute of Stitches & Crafts

, , ,

Last week, I had a great interview with the Atlanta Institute of Stitches & Crafts. You can read the whole interview here.

If you don’t know about the Atlanta Institute of Stitches & Crafts yet, you should! They are teaching all sorts of awesome craft classes. One of the masterminds behind the institute is Sarah Lodato, who has been an amazing and creative help to the Indie Craft Experience on several occasions. She’s the best and also super talented!

Jessica Swift Rain Boots

, , , ,

I feel very lucky to know so many creative people. Almost everyone I know has some (or many!) side projects going on or they even make a living with their creativity. One such friend is the uber-talented Jessica Swift. I “met” Jess on Flickr 5 or 6 years ago and shortly thereafter she was a vendor at ICE so I met her in real life. She and her boyfriend (now husband), Ryan, were so nice. I can’t remember how we became friends after that, but in more recent years we have traveled to Chicago and DC for craft markets, crafted together prior to those shows to get ready and I even had the honor of enjoying home cooked Indian food at her house a few weeks ago!

Last summer, Jessica did a Kickstarter so that she could produce rain boots. She is a real Kickstarter success story, going beyond her goal with time to spare. Once she met her monetary goal she had a lot to do to reach her actual goal, but I’m pleased to announce that the boots are a reality now and I got my pair recently. They come in a box that looks like this (so profesh!):

The boots themselves feature patterns designed by Jessica. Very vibrant, full of color!! The inside has a secret motivational message (seen above), which is great any day – rainy or not. Luckily, it has rained a lot lately so I’ve gotten to wear my pair! And they are so awesome. Go here for more info about the boots and here to learn more about Jessica and her work.

Delish. Beets.

, , , ,

I have been really obsessed with beets lately. I’m not exactly sure why but here are a few guesses:

1) They are sooooo pretty. I mean, real ugly on the outside and then gorgeous PURPLE on the inside.

2) I’m proud of myself for learning how to cook them (and their greens) all on my own. I usually learn how to cook new foods from my amazingly talented husband, but this one I tackled myself.

3) They are healthy and delicious.

I’ve experimented with several ways to cook them and I haven’t decided on a favorite. Probably the easiest: cut off the greens (save these for cooking later) and end of the roots, place in a casserole dish, submerge in water (you can cut the beets in half if they are too big to cover in water), put the lid on the dish and stick in the oven at 325 or 350 for about 30-60 minutes. They are done when you can easily stab them with a fork all the way. Once they’ve cooled, the skins will slip right off. Be careful during all of this because the purple is beautiful, but you don’t want to get it on your clothes!

I really enjoy eating them in salad…spinach, lemon goat cheese, cashews and beets with balsamic vinaigrette.

A Trip to Arabia Mountain

, , ,

We visited the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve yesterday to walk up Arabia Mountain. The nature preserve is located in Lithonia about 20 minutes east of our neighborhood. I’d been there before, when I was very little according to my mom and again about 10 years ago with some friends so it had been awhile. I’m astonished that 1) DeKalb County is so huge and 2) while I live in a very urban area there are areas of my county that are so underdeveloped and beautiful.

It has been abnormally warm lately and it was finally cold today. Our walk was very windy! But lots of fun.

Woody Allen Vintage Fashion

I’m a big Woody Allen fan. I don’t love all of his movies, but the ones I love — Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah & Her Sisters — I can watch over and over noticing different details each viewing. Lately, I’ve taken note of some of the great clothes worn by the female characters. His outfits are extremely consistent from movie to movie, decade to decade, but the ladies have some really great fashions.

Here is a shot from Stardust Memories, 1980.

I love the shirt worn by Isobel (played by Marie-Christine Barrault). The square neck, stripes along the seams and that anchor…it’s so great!

{I set a goal to post 52 times in 2012 so I’m going to keep track. This is 2/52}
