This past weekend we ended up making a last minute trip to Paducah, KY, where my husband grew up and his family still lives. We lived there for a few months in 2003, our stay cut short by the sudden realization that we are in fact city folk!

Still I love Paducah, especially downtown and our former neighborhood of Lower Town. It’s fun to discover anything new in town, like this meditation labyrinth where I spent a reflective moment.

I also enjoyed this small portion of a much larger sculpture. Fabric, string, nails, wood – nice! The labyrinth and sculptures are located on N. 6th next to Etcetera Coffee.

As it appears that I’m doing a terrible job of keeping up with this blog, you might consider also following me on Tumblr or Instagram (abardis on both) where I post at least once a day (if not obsessively throughout the day!).

I love Decatur. It’s where I grew up, went to college, spent the first few years of adulthood, met my husband and married him. I’ve seen it completely transform. And it’s where I totally fell in love with the concept of local businesses and small business owners.

This weekend we visited twice…yay! Friday night we met up with Davis’ old roommates from his St. Augustine days at Leon’s and the Brick Store Pub. On Saturday we met up with them again to go to the Decatur Arts Fest (which I LIVED for when I was younger!). We ate at Mac McGee’s, bought a lot of art, got chai at Java Monkey and frozen yogurt at The Yogurt Tap. It was super fun!

Last week, I had a great interview with the Atlanta Institute of Stitches & Crafts. You can read the whole interview here.

If you don’t know about the Atlanta Institute of Stitches & Crafts yet, you should! They are teaching all sorts of awesome craft classes. One of the masterminds behind the institute is Sarah Lodato, who has been an amazing and creative help to the Indie Craft Experience on several occasions. She’s the best and also super talented!

I feel very lucky to know so many creative people. Almost everyone I know has some (or many!) side projects going on or they even make a living with their creativity. One such friend is the uber-talented Jessica Swift. I “met” Jess on Flickr 5 or 6 years ago and shortly thereafter she was a vendor at ICE so I met her in real life. She and her boyfriend (now husband), Ryan, were so nice. I can’t remember how we became friends after that, but in more recent years we have traveled to Chicago and DC for craft markets, crafted together prior to those shows to get ready and I even had the honor of enjoying home cooked Indian food at her house a few weeks ago!

Last summer, Jessica did a Kickstarter so that she could produce rain boots. She is a real Kickstarter success story, going beyond her goal with time to spare. Once she met her monetary goal she had a lot to do to reach her actual goal, but I’m pleased to announce that the boots are a reality now and I got my pair recently. They come in a box that looks like this (so profesh!):

The boots themselves feature patterns designed by Jessica. Very vibrant, full of color!! The inside has a secret motivational message (seen above), which is great any day – rainy or not. Luckily, it has rained a lot lately so I’ve gotten to wear my pair! And they are so awesome. Go here for more info about the boots and here to learn more about Jessica and her work.

My Favorite Christmas Gift

I received so many thoughtful and fun gifts this year for Christmas that I hate to pick a favorite, but I can’t help myself.

This fall I was delighted to see photos posted by my sister and brother-in-law of artwork created by my 9-year-old nephew. He recreated pieces by Piet Mondrian on paper with markers and (even more exciting) with legos. So you can imagine my excited when I unwrapped the above. It is probably meant to be an ornament but I think it deserves to be displayed year round.

The following letter was enclosed, which made the gift even more amazing. Since we were opening gifts with my Mom and brother we also got to hear the letters he sent to them. It’s so great to hear his thoughts. He’s getting so grown up. Sadly, Christopher and his brother and sister live in San Diego so I am their long distance aunt which is not as much fun as being a nearby aunt, but I’m hoping with this great penmanship perhaps we can start sending each other mail more often.
