I often snap photos as I’m headed eastbound on MARTA from Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center (work) to Edgewood/Candler Park (home). The Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts are a favorite subject to shoot. The Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill was in operation for almost 100 years, closing in 1977. I always heard about the surrounding mill town, called Cabbagetown, when I was growing up. The residents were Appalachian. It was a small town in the inner city.

Once the mill closed, the neighborhood went into decline. People started renovating houses there in the 90s and the mill was turned into lofts in the late 90s. It wasn’t until recently when I saw this video that I realized how depressing it might be to live in the shadow of a huge boarded up building.

The Olympics Are Over For Now

1996 Olympics, 2012, atlanta, Turner Field

The Olympics are over for now and I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t find the time to watch very much this go around. There are reminders of the Olympics all around in Atlanta left over from the 1996 games. And I don’t mean empty facilities that are no longer in use because that’s not the case here. I like this reminder on Capitol Ave next to Turner Field. Feels magnificent, despite the not-so-attractive architecture.

This past weekend we ended up making a last minute trip to Paducah, KY, where my husband grew up and his family still lives. We lived there for a few months in 2003, our stay cut short by the sudden realization that we are in fact city folk!

Still I love Paducah, especially downtown and our former neighborhood of Lower Town. It’s fun to discover anything new in town, like this meditation labyrinth where I spent a reflective moment.

I also enjoyed this small portion of a much larger sculpture. Fabric, string, nails, wood – nice! The labyrinth and sculptures are located on N. 6th next to Etcetera Coffee.

As it appears that I’m doing a terrible job of keeping up with this blog, you might consider also following me on Tumblr or Instagram (abardis on both) where I post at least once a day (if not obsessively throughout the day!).

I love Decatur. It’s where I grew up, went to college, spent the first few years of adulthood, met my husband and married him. I’ve seen it completely transform. And it’s where I totally fell in love with the concept of local businesses and small business owners.

This weekend we visited twice…yay! Friday night we met up with Davis’ old roommates from his St. Augustine days at Leon’s and the Brick Store Pub. On Saturday we met up with them again to go to the Decatur Arts Fest (which I LIVED for when I was younger!). We ate at Mac McGee’s, bought a lot of art, got chai at Java Monkey and frozen yogurt at The Yogurt Tap. It was super fun!

This has been a jam packed weekend (so excited that it isn’t even over yet!), which began with a walk through downtown Atlanta on my way home from work on Friday.
